New Knights of Columbus / Marist College Poll of American Catholic Voters

Earlier this afternoon, Supreme Knight Carl Anderson addressed the press from Rome during a live news conference from the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. to highlight a new poll conducted for the Knights of Columbus by Marist College. The poll, which oversampled more than 800 Catholics nationwide, tackled a wide range of issues and produced some of the most detailed polling data ever collected on the Catholic electorate.

Here is the news release from the Knights issued earlier...

Poll shows major differences between practicing and non-practicing Catholics.

A just-completed nationwide poll provides new insights into America’s Catholic voters, highlighting the ways in which they differ from the electorate as a whole. But the survey also examines in detail the ways in which the 65 percent of Catholics who practice their faith regularly differ from the 35 percent who do not.

The poll was conducted for the Knights of Columbus by the Marist College Institute of Public Opinion between September 24 and October 3, 2008.

In some areas, the poll finds that Catholic voters’ views are similar to the general population, on issues like government funding for the poor, amnesty for illegal immigrants, global warming, civil unions and same-sex marriage and a belief that the economy is the nation’s number one problem. 70 percent of all registered voters and 70 percent of all registered practicing Catholics say they would vote for a candidate who believes marriage should only be between a man and a woman, including majorities of the electorate and of practicing Catholics who would "definitely vote for" such a candidate. Catholics and non-Catholics agree that America needs a moral makeover. 71 percent of all US residents and 73 percent of US Catholics believe that “the country’s moral compass right now points in the wrong direction.”

But in other areas, Catholic voters differ from the electorate as a whole. They are less likely to vote for a candidate who favors the death penalty, and more likely to favor a candidate who is committed to success in the war in Iraq.

Some of the most dramatic differences are found within the community of Catholic voters. 59 percent of practicing Catholics are pro-life, while 65 percent of non-practicing Catholics are pro-choice. Non-practicing Catholics are far more likely to be pro-choice than the population at large (65 percent vs. 50 percent). Only 30 percent of US residents favor same-sex marriage, while 46 percent of non-practicing Catholics do. 75 percent of practicing Catholics oppose same-sex marriage.

Parental notification if a daughter under 18 is planning to have an abortion is supported by 77 percent of U.S. residents, and by 84 percent of practicing Catholics.

Kudos to the Knights for funding such a poll. The Left likes to believe that they have made inroads with practicing Catholics, when in fact they have NOT!!! True, practicing Catholics, as this poll highlights, are Pro-Life and Conservative. It's the non-practicing catholics who find themselves as Pro-Abortion and fans of Sen. Obama.

I woke up this morning and faced the real world. Today I realized that the servants we elected to represent us in Congress have deserted us. Today they acted like our masters instead of our representatives as dictated in the US Constitution.

For whatever reasons they had, in closed door meetings, be it blackmail, a threat of martial law, the nation going bankrupt or whatever else, they are supposed to be our voices. And our voices have been heard loud and clear in Washington for the last two weeks. Except they were ignored.

What, in the name of God, is the reason for this? What information did they receive that made the majority change their vote? And why aren’t the American people told the truth? I will tell you why. It is because their policies and their close ties to the special interests groups have brought us to this point. Like permitting 38 million illegal aliens, to take up residence, steal millions of Americans’ jobs, steal their businesses and to generally wreak havoc on American citizens.

It is because our politicians threatened our financial institutions with lawsuits if they didn’t agree to finance mortgages to people that could not afford them. It is because our politicians refused to close our borders and therefore aided and abetted a massive invasion of America’s shores.

It is because our politicians worked closely with the special interests, our administration and the US Chamber of Commerce to facilitate this invasion. It is because our politicians, while pretending to be listening to us, have forgotten the primary reason that they were elected, and that is to represent the American people.

This bailout, approved by our politicians, is only the first step. There will be other bailouts because a lot of financial institutions have a lot of bad debts as demanded by our politicians. These debts, thanks to our politicians once again, are going to kill the American dollar. They are going to bring our dollar down to almost nothing.

Eventually, within the next few months, because of our politicians and president, our dollar is going to be worth a lot less than it is today. Americans are going to be forced to go through some bad times the next few years because our politicians have stabbed us in the back. Because they would rather be reelected than to serve the American people, We the People are going to be forced into a world that we do not want.

Because of the almighty dollar, our country is going to collapse. Because of the almighty dollar, our politicians have permitted our government institutions to become corrupted. They allowed 38 million illegal aliens across our borders and did almost nothing to counteract it. In fact they have aided and abetted it and they should be brought up on charges of sedition for that reason alone.

They have allowed those millions of illegals to remain here, and in fact, have forced our financial institutions to give them mortgages on homes that they had no right to buy, in our country, to be paid for by them having stolen American jobs. For whatever reason they may have, our politicians cannot be depended on any longer by us.

By their actions in this financial bailout, they have shown that they worry more about their futures than the future of America. Because of what they have done I must now worry about the future of my grandchildren than my future. Instead of retirement, I must look forward to a new world where America doesn’t matter in the greater scheme of things, because our politicians have decided that their political futures weigh more on their conscience than what the American people demand of them.

America is to be no more because our politicians have demanded that their political futures weigh more on their conscience then anything else. Before anything else, they must be re-elected, because they know best. Before the Constitution, the Bill of rights, and the rule of law, they know best, because they are our betters. Being re-elected outweighs everything else because they know better then us.

The next blow is going to be amnesty for all the millions that have invaded us without our permission, because of their don’t enforce our laws policies; our elected officials are going to force amnesty down our throats. To hell with what we say about it, their political futures outweigh the rights of American citizens.

I say hell no! It is time for the FBI and the US military to become involved. Our politicians have forsaken us; therefore they do not represent us any longer. It is time for our politicians to be arrested and jailed because they do not represent the best interest of American citizens.

If our politicians would rather bail out criminal companies and pay heed to threats than listen to the dictates of American citizens then they need to resign because the Constitution is supposed to remain supreme.

It is our guiding document under the rule of law and they have defecated on it. In their greater scheme of things the rule of law has been surpassed by political correctness and that is what we must obey before any other law. We must worry more about being called a racists and bigots that we must worry about our jobs and businesses.

We must worry more about bailing out the rich bastards on Wall Street than what the Constitution says. We must worry more about the rights of 38 million illegal alien invaders because their rights trumpet our rights.

It is past time to get America back on the right track because America as envisioned by our founding fathers is almost gone. We have allowed our politicians to gain dictatorial power that is not proscribed in the Constitution and it must be taken from them because it portends the death of America.
